Anyone with a winter baby in the snowy North knows the trials of tracking down appropriate outerwear. Stroller sacs are fine unless you actually want to take the baby out of the stroller, and winter baby buntings are generally about as practical as those infant snow suits.
Mom Jacqueline Haberfeld was faced with the same challenges. As a New York City mom dealing with subways, steps, and crowded store aisles, Jackie relied heavily on her Baby Bjorn carrier. But she couldn't figure out how to keep her daughter warm in it.
"Snowsuits made her uncomfortable in the carrier," Jackie said, "wrapping my husband's coat around her while I carried her was awkward and unattractive, and my husband didn't have a coat he could close while carrying her." Jackie also found (as we all have) that blankets fell right off.
So Jackie created what would become the first Popover and started using it herself. "The rest," as she put it, "was the result of incredible enthusiasm from people we saw on the street."
Enthusiasm, indeed. In just a few years, the Popover has gone from prototype to popularity, keeping thousands of babies toasty in six countries. It even won an APEX design award last year for being among the best Polartec products on the market.
Clearly other "Bjorn addicts" appreciate the high quality, windproof fabric, and the thoughtful design that allows parents to slip it easily on and off the carrier as they go from cold sidewalks to overheated stores and back again. And Jackie is especially proud to employ a living wage factory right in Pennsylvania which manufactures the Popovers.
She also loves the letters she gets from parents explaining how her product has made life easier for them. But most of all, Jackie values how the Popover has made life easier for herself – the company gives her the ability to work from home so she can spend considerable time with her daughter. And back in the early days, she was even able to take her to sales calls and marketing meetings.
All working moms should be so lucky.
