If you've ever brought home what you thought was a fantastic find only to realize that
if you did this and changed that it would work about ten times better, then you've got something in common with this month's featured mom-trepreneur, Lavinia Lobo. Except instead of just imagining what she could do to her fancy schmancy but totally impractical diaper bag, she actually did it. And thus Baby Kaed was born--a collection of wonderfully functional diaper bag designs for the stylish mom.
Although Lavinia has no formal design training, her inspiration is simple: Parenting. "Just hanging out with my son every day and realizing what both of us needed to make life a little easier when we walked out the door helped me create something that looks as "un-diaper bag" as possible, she says.
Then she adds, "Just because we smell of spit up & have leaky boob syndrome doesn't mean we have to forego our fashionable ways!"
Leaky boobs? Who, us?
One of the unique features of Lavinia's bags is that they come with everything a new mom would want in a diaper bag except perhaps the changing table. Baby Kaed customers are grateful to unzip their bags the first time to discover a wipe case, a cosmetic bag, a wet bag, plus thoughtfully placed pockets with tons of room for diapers, snacks, and bottles galore. All without compromising style. In fact, her designs could pass for a non-diaper bag any day.
From the looks and sounds of it, Lavinia is enjoying running her own business. "The best part is that I make my own schedule, which means I get quality time with the cutest kid in the world." And if there is a worst part, Lavinia can't think of any. "If there ever comes a time when there is a worst part of this business, I shouldn't be doing it anymore." With her positive attitude and great spirit, it's no wonder Lavinia's bags have be=
come such a fast hit with customers and retailers alike.
Not to mention the staff of Cool Mom Picks, who will be seen proudly sporting their own Baby Kaed bags this fall.

Why get just any old winter hat when your little one can sport a one-eyed orange monster with horns from Creature Co-op? It's just scary enough to be cute - sort of like my 2-year old daughter. -Kristen
Thinking ahead to our planned travels for the holidays, the Rosy Posy Art Folio from Teacups and Tadpoles is on my must have list. It will keep my preschooler happily coloring as we drive over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house. -Nancy
I'm totally digging the Learning Lunch bags. As an avid reader of cereal boxes and toothpaste tubes, I really like the idea of kids being able to feed their heads while they eat lunch out of these clever bags. -Izzy
Graphic designer Tobi Wood designs the kind of prints that I want to fill wall of my home with -- simple, graphic, modern. Serenity now! -Liz
Did I seriously grow a human for 9 months, push it out my hoo-ha, and survive to tell a story? Yes indeed! With the Love Hurts materni-tee you can tell the story while turning heads instead of stomachs. -Rebecca
I've been blown away by Liz Mitchell's album You are My Little Bird. Not only is it a favorite for listening in the car (even when my kids aren't with me), but it's also high on my list of gift giving. -Amy
Vincent has much more than the standard issue black patent leather stand-bys that I buy every fall season. There are zebra print high tops, bright red rain boots emblazoned with H2O, and glitzy gold Mary Janes. Best of all when you pay a visit to Vincent, you're not paying through the nose. -Julie

Welcome
It's Fall as you can tell by the gleeful cheers of parents everywhere with kids returned to school, and postpartum belly-hiding sweaters returned to the front of the closet.
In honor of one of our four favorite seasons, Cool Mom Picks is pleased to tell you about an exciting new affiliation we've developed with three fantastic websites, all providing outstanding resources for busy parents: Mommytrack'd, the working mother's guide to managed chaos; ParentHacks, a collaborative weblog of practical parenting wisdom; and Kids off the Couch, offering free weekly popcorn adventure emails to get your kids excited about movies, culture and family time.
We're all of the belief that while some business guides insist we compete with other websites, we'd much rather collaborate. Particularly with such useful--and of course, fun--mom-run sites. No boring blah-be-de-blah here. We sincerely hope you'll check them each out, and sign up for their newsletters. C'mon, would we steer you wrong?
Also, this month as you surely know is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Make sure you check out our site for small, CMP-approved companies making great products to help raise money for essential research and treatment of this disease. If your company is donating proceeds to Breast Cancer organizations this month, let us know! We'd love to hear about it.
Last, keep your gorgeous eyes peeled for some great new features on our site, including a Cool Mom Picks Q&A. If you're in desperate need of baby gift advice, or are hoping to track down just the right indie album or leopard print green receiving blanket for your future rock star, drop us an email at and we'll see what we can do for you.
Happy Halloween, parents. Stay away from the candy dish--or at least save a few Kit Kats for us.
