Yoga for Kids - more plausible than you might think

Storyland YogaThe thing about kids --and I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume it's not just my own who are like this-- is that they don't always have the patience to hold yoga postures or meditate. But they certainly like stories. And excitement. And good old-fashioned silliness.

Not exactly three things I think of when I think of yoga, but that's exactly what I love about this new yoga DVD for kids.

Ahmed Fahmy, a certified children's yoga instructor, is a gentle presence who isn't afraid of being silly. On the Storyland Yoga DVD, he teaches yoga through the telling of a couple of environmental stories. And he seems to embrace kids for what they are: energetic balls of fun.

Okay, I'll admit, it's hard not to chuckle a bit at the blatant eco-messages like when they drive in their electric cars or push really hard to save a beached whale, but hey, I don't think the kids will take issue with it. And truly, if it means they might ask about these things later, that's not such a bad thing.

So the next time you and your kids want to get your yoga on, grab this DVD, sit back, and enjoy the happiness and hippie-ness that ensues. -Stephanie

Personally, I prefer the Move With Me yoga DVD. I find the Playful Planet routines disjointed in the way they're presented and Ahmed doesn't give enough direction about how to do the poses. My children like both discs though.

Last year we used Playful Planet for my 4 yo boy's birthday party. All the kids got into it--even the 7 yos.

Ahmed's storytelling is what sets it apart from the other kids yoga out there.

It also helped get us through our looooong Wisconsin winters.

LOVE Playful planet.

We LOVE playful planet at our house. My boys ask to do yoga because of it. How awesome is that?
