Weleda, take me away!
A
s the resident beauty product maven around here, I've always wondered why so many bath and beauty products include calendula. I mean, how powerful can a pretty little yellow flower be? I also wonder how they get the oil out of a rosehip, how they keep lotion from separating, and why unicorns don't exist. At least three of these four questions will be answered for me (and you) next week by biodynamic powerhouse Weleda.I am thrilled to have been invited to tour the largest medicinal garden in the world this week at the Weleda Naturals Headquarters in Swabisch Gmund, Germany. I've loved Weleda ever since my first tube of Calendula Baby Cream, which I used on myself as much as on my kids. I also love their philosophy, anthroposophy, which encourages unity of body, mind, and environment to promote health, wellness, and beauty.

That is so cool, Delilah! I'm very jealous! ;) I, too, am a big fan of the Weleda calendula baby cream and baby wash.
I have a couple of questions. Are their ingredients somehow measured for potency? I've always wondered if these products are somehow tested since things can vary from harvest to harvest.
Also, what's the deal behind the biodynamic philosophy? I know vaguely something about harvesting at certain times... but what are the claims associated with it? Is it better for the environment?

I have written your questions down, Mama H, and will be asking Eva-Maria Walle tomorrow when we work in the biodynamic gardens. From what I've learned so far, they have some neat procedures in place to help maximize the healthy output of everything growing here, including using nets to sun-dry herbs to help the compost grow. Can't wait to learn more, and I'll be passing on some fun facts soon!
I love, love, love Weleda! Have been using the Calendula and Body Wash for my 4 year old and myself! Most products are a bit expensive and I noticed they all come from Germany... I come from Brazil and Weleda has their own stores there(they also manipulate homeopathic medicine). Any plans to open US stores? Have fun and bring us news!
